Satoshi Kon

Satoshi Kon, originally uploaded by angryparsnip.

Director Satoshi Kon has died this week at age 46 from pancreatic
cancer.

Along with Hayao Miyazaki he is a master of Japanese Animation.
Both these directors have shown animation can go beyond what people
think and expect.

The movies "Millennium Actress and Paprika are great examples of
his remarkable visual style,
blending the boundaries of reality and fantasy and the breaking of the
"fourth wall"
In fact Paprika has been called the base for the new movie "
Inception " with Leonardo Di Caprio, Ken Watanabe and Ellen Page.

My favorite movies :
" Millennium Actress" is a visually beautiful movie that has past and
present colliding with fate and destiny.
" Tokyo Godfathers " has a more comedic story-line but touches on
themes of guilt, love and what is a family.

His fifth and last movie "The Dream Machine" is still in production.

This is so sad.

music, OST, "Millennium Actress", Susumu Hirasawa

  1. Alas these are all new to me and at the moment I am finding it difficult to absorb anything that isn't familiar.
My husband reads the same history books over and over.

  2. Sad, so early a death. We have lost two friends this week, but at least they were both of an age where it is to be expected.

I have somewhat a hard time wrapping my mind around new tectonically.
    I like the familiar too.
A few years before my divorce, when things were so bad, I watched "The Vicar Of Dibley" everyday they were like my friends who stopped by for a chat. I think I wore that CD out.

Death of someone you don't know but admire is strange. I didn't know him personally but admired his talent and the way he wove a story line, he also co-wrote the stories and loved his animation style.
With a death of family or friends it is harder to grasp, the heart hurts expected or not. My condolences to you.

  4. My son is a great fan of Japanese animation. I know nothing about them, but he says there are many layers and angles to them. Sorry to hear about this untimely death.

  5. Kass...
Japanese Animation, not the 13 year old fan boy type, has many layers and movies like the ones from Hayao Miyazaki, the main character is always a girl who can solve the problem.
There are so many great animation movies out
    there.
