Square Dog Friday, 1993 memories

You be makin' fud ?

Their not allowed in the kitchen.
So they inch as close as they can.

we be likin' fud.
They look under the glass table to not beg but just looking.
wahahahahahahaha ha
........

Armchair Squid asked what was the object on the table ? He had several ideas but it is
melted glass block.
Our home burned down in the Laguna Beach Wildfire of 1993.
One of the many remodels of the home we put a small kids bathroom in by moving a wall.
The only bad thing (for me) was it had no window. So I had them knock out another wall that looked
out to my bathroom tub and a huge window that looked out to our side yard.
I put glass block in that wall so it got lots of natural light during the day.

The fire was so hot that it melted the glass wall like a waterfall. Only problem was that that
workers threw out much of what I saved, so I only have two pieced left.

I call her The Reclining Lady.

You can see her head, side swept hair arms folding and legs.

She changes color during the day.
This table is in the Entry that has a huge round skylight.

 I think she is beautiful.

Here is one of my glass blocks.

At one time I wanted to be an Archaeologist or work at a Museum.
This is my Museum !

Friends came and people I didn't even know came and dug in the soft dust that was filled with chunks of sharp metal, glass, wood and my treasures.
Pottery and metal made it through the fire the best.

.

My sewing machine and a water sprinkler.

 My Pig Bank

 Daughters Bunny Bank.

The shiny glass Christmas Ball that break when you just look at them.  They made it !

 Old large Christmas Lights.

.
My very heavy thick Glass coffee table. It broke into shards and square blocks.

My home is the 3rd from the white house.

 My street.

My home.
We had the Governor Of California give a speech in front of my home.
We had a wall with window plus fireplace. Made a good photo shoot. Lots of
Press and photos in the the International papers.
.
Reading about Australia is breaking my heart. All the land, people, animals
Especially the wildlife. I read this and I can smell the smoke and feel the heat.
I am donating what I can to help the wildlife.

As always here  is your pretty to start the week.

cheers,  parsnip

  1. Horrendous. By comparison, my experience with a house fire was nothing.

  2. I have heard you mention the fire. I am so very sorry you and your children had to go through that but thank goodness you survived. I hope none of you were harmed. It is amazing to see these mementos that have remained. Looking at the pictures of the fire, I am surprised you have even this much left. It must be sad for you to see these items that have remained. I guess it would give you mixed feelings?

The gud dugs look quite fine and I see Agatha has dressed up for her photo! She looks good in that color!

    1. It happened long ago but it is part of our life. When something bad/ horrific happens one has to look it in the eye live.

  3. Your museum is so beautifully organized and set up, but it's so sad that it hurts my heart to think of it. I'm so glad you came out on the other side, as hard as it must have been for you and your family. Everything could be replaced, and after all, everything we have will be left behind anyway. Family is what counts most of all. God help those who've lost loved ones in the horrendous fires, wherever they happen to be. They are much too common now. Every day we're given is a treasure beyond measure. I love those good dogs - they make everything worthwhile, don't they!

    1. You are right you must just stand up and don't wallow in it. I know some one who still hasn't got over her home burning. She wallows in upset and pity. All her problems are because of this.

  4. It is just what it is . Your experience plus what you were going through at the time is just as horrible as someone else. Our was just on a bigger scale than yours and as it is in Australia or any day in California.

Then there is Henry and Megan who are so upset and afraid of flashlights (or not enough flashlights for Megan) but don't like the nitty gritty of daily life. Oh please they had be nice, cut ribbons, smile look clean and not wrinkled and the had a home, food, clothes and could pick anything to work at !
But life is so hard. They cry crocodile tears. Give me a break !

William I hope Canada kicks them out.

  5. I am in awe of your fire damaged pieces and so amazed at how beautiful they look on display. I've never seen a close up of your reclining lady. She's beautiful. We were not able to salvage much from our house fire but amazingly, a few first edition books out of my collection managed to survive. I can't imagine how. They're not very pretty and 12 years later, still smell smokey but I love them all the same. How ever did that white house in the photo manage to survive while all around it is blackened and leveled? Wishing you a great weekend Gayle. X

    1. I wish I knew more about your fire. Put those book in a plex box, air holes and keep them.
The white house made it because the owner built it himself and had really thick wall no plantings. The fire curved and took out half of my street. S houses on both side and the 5 houses that burned. The flames blew up the back of the hill up and over two streets and burned mine.

  6. So sad, but I love your collection of memories. In 1993 I worked at the Los Angeles Times and remember that edition!

  7. I always love your pretty photo for the week. But, oh, my. The story of your house fire is heartbreaking. What good friends you had who dug in the rubble to find what was left. The sixteen year old niece of a friend of mine died in a California fire late in 2018 - not the terrible one but very near by in Orinda.

    1. We lost history and a cat that took off but we all survived. So sorry about your Niece. More and more people are dying in these fires. So sad.

My family history that made it from Poland, the Family Christening Gown, and my Daughters Ashes all destroyed in the fire.

  10. There is a savage beauty in those salvaged remains Gayle. I did wonder how you would be feeling during the Australian fired - can't imagine how you must have felt to lose your home. Good that those lovely two know nothing at all about it. How I am missing my darlign Tess - you know all about it - in the time i have been corresponding with you you have suffered the loss of beloved dogs - but how it breaks our hearts.

I have been thinking of you and Tess. I miss her so much just like my Samantha. The way she died still breaks my heart and the soul breaking anger at my X will haunt me forever

  11. Such a devastating fire you had to go through. Sadness and hardship of losing home like that is beyond my imagination...I’m grateful you could recover some items and they look beautiful in your home.

  12. Wow! You sure have a couple of well-trained dogs. Not allowed in the kitchen? And they actually stand at the edge of it, looking in? Our cats aren't "allowed" some places, either. Like on our kitchen table. So whenever I find any evidence that one of them was up there, I always say some stray cat must've snuck into the house, because our girls would never do that... !

What you and your family went through with the fire is horrifying and heartbreaking, but the fact that you've created beauty from the bits and pieces you were able to salvage shows how resilient you are and how strong your spirit is.

  13. They sneak in and pretend they forget. My kitchen is small has an island and if two people plus my walker is in there it gets tight.

Although the memories must always be with you, life has to go on, and thank goodness it did.
