Square Dog Friday but no Larry

It is that day again, the best day in the week,
Square Dog Friday.
You know the drill so let's woof it !

.

On Thursday we drove up to Phoenix to meet a dog called Larry.
A mop of Cairn Terrier to be a friend for thehamish.
Two and a half hours up the last half hour of Phoenix traffic.
We arrived at the "Meet and Greet" and found out they really wanted us to look
at two other dogs that were very cute but not the one we really came up to see.
Turns out Larry was not at all like his photo and although very cute and sweet
was an intergenic puppy that I really can not handle.
What really frustrated me was the photo was clearly not Larry.
.
We ate a quick lunch, and gave money to someone who really needed it
and drove home. It took us forever to get through the mess that is Phoenix traffic
near the airport and made it back home again.
.
The biggest disappointment of this day was later in the evening I did look at the
Pima County Shelter page (which breaks my heart) and found among all the
Chihuahua and Pitbulls were four terrier mixes that I could have looked at yesterday !
They will be gone by today (small dog always are)and I am super frustrated.
I have three appointments today that leaves me no time to go way across town
and see them.
Either they will be adopted out or a "group" will scoop them up
and I will have to try find the group if I can, and then adopt from them.
.
So here on this crazy Friday is the gud dug thehamish.

.

Here is your pretty for the start of the weekend.

It is alway a gud day to play with a gud dug.

    2. It took several months to find our Lucy, and though at 9 years old she is getting old, still plays like a puppy. Good luck with finding another dog.

  2. I really do like the treatments you've given the shot of Hamish, particularly that second one.

  3. Hi, Gayle!

I know the drive time between Tuscon and Phoenix and the heavy traffic around both cities because Mrs. Shady and I crisscrossed Arizona on our trip west in 2014. I am very sorry to learn that you wasted all that time and effort when your dog shopping mission fell through. I'm sure there will be plenty of other cute and cuddly dogs to choose from and I admire you for being very selective in finding a canine companion for thehamish. I'm sure it will happen soon.

Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Gayle!

    3. They are at homes only 2 at shelters. One dog just stood there and barked in his face.

    2. We've changed the names of almost all the older dogs we've adopted, before we've sent the re-registration papers in. Our current Lab, Inca, was called Berta, which no-one liked, so we changed it, and are very happy, as we're sure she is too, with her new name.
Do you particularly want another male? We have had our last two Labs from reputable breeding kennels, and they are retired breeding females. Sadly, the older one went to the Rainbow Bridge on Monday, but she had a good life with us and was the most gentle sweet girl.

  9. I have always felt that the dogs we are "meant" to have in our lives have arrived one way or another. I had a beloved collie when I was a girl. His name was Sir Lancelot. Years later as an adult, my husband, two small children, and I went searching for a collie for our family. We checked at the rescues. We were amazed at their definition of "collie". Then different breeders, and didn't find the "right" one. The search continued for many weeks. Finally, I discovered a breeder of collies in the next county. We drove there, and she had very nice kennels set up. As you entered the premises you had to walk through a pan of disinfectant. She did this to cut down on disease exposure to her dogs. There were two litters of collie pups. One litter was black and white ones, and the other were sable and white. Their parents were huge collies, just like my childhood collie had been. We sat on the grass with our little kids to see how the pups were with the kids. Fat little collie puppies tumbled all over us, each one cuter than the next. Our choice finally came down to two pups. We had such a hard time deciding, until our son stood up and started toddling around and the one collie pup stayed right by his side, playing, maybe even doing a puppyish version of herding him, but not roughly. The pup had already formed an attachment to our son. We decided that was the pup for us. The lady ran a very professional kennel, and had many ribbons from dog shows on the walls of her study. Each of the puppies she had at her kennel had a three ring notebook with all of their pedigree and inoculation information in it and a name that she had assigned to each pup. A different name was written on each binder. She pulled a binder down from the shelf, and laid it on the desk to show me the pup's information. And on the front of the notebook, and several times within, was the puppy's name...Sir Lancelot! Apparently, we and that particular puppy found just who we were meant to. Our Sir Lancelot lived to be a month or so short of 16 years old. He was a "gud dug". Time flies with our "gud dugs" by our side. Our son, who once toddled along side that "gud dug", was in the US Air Force at the time Sir Lancelot died.

I hope that you and the dog you are meant to have find each other very soon.

  10. The Hamisch looks good in every color. What's wrong with the chihuahuas--they are small?

    1. Your Chihuahuas are very well trained and from what I see on your blog quite nice.
      Besides very elegant.
But they are too small for me and thehamish.

Living next to the border as I do, chihuahuas are what they are breed for watch dogs. So the ones at the shelters that I have seen are mean, snapping, barking and jumping.
On several meet and greets, the chihuahuas mixes we looked at, were wary, mean and
snappy. One had to be held back from attacking thehamish and he just sat there.
I understand they are only as good as their family but they are truly guard dogs first. They are breed for that. So for me no Chihuahuas.

But that said my vet said she was been bitten by Scottie !

  12. I'm so sorry about the Larry debacle. Sadly, I've had some less than good experiences with volunteers too. Hope you have better luck with a different group.

Cool Hamish pics...kind of an Andy Warhol thing going there, only with more interesting variations. Love it!

  13. Chihuahuas come in all shapes and sizes and temperaments. I've been fostering for a local rescue and just adopted one who was billed as a terrier mix. DNA came back 68% chi and a smattering of min pin and rat terrier. No guard dog he. Scared of his own shadow, quiet and sweet. So u can't go by breed alone- or what the shelter guesses his breed might be!
Too we have rescued here that specialize in senior doggies and almost all rescues get them from time to time. Right now I have an 18 year old fospice (hospice/foster) who is a lovely old gal. And as pretty as a picture!
Keep looking and if you hit a wall, I'd be happy to put u in touch with some rescue folks. I'm special cases they can waive the home visit and I'm sure we could get a volunteer to deliver the right dog. I know I would consider doing so. Any dog would be very lucky to find his way to you and with your vet as reference I'm sure an allowance could be made!
Good luck. You're a great mom and Hamish is lucky to have you!

    1. Oh I never judge a gud dug by what he is. But chihuahuas are just not for me. I have been snapped at nipped and growled at. A blog friend has two and they are sweet but for me they are too tiny and I do not like the eyes. I am sure there can be and are nice ones but here in Tucson they are over bred.
I will take a break for now. The trip to Phoenix wiped me out.
thehamish was brought up with Watson so I think he really misses a friend.

  14. Sorry to hear your trip to meet Larry didn't turn out as you'd hoped. But who knows? Maybe the real reason for your trip was so you'd be there in the right place to give money to that particular person who needed it.

I love the way you played around with thehamish's image. Very cool. Years ago, the husband of one of my co-workers was into playing with photography. The old-fashioned way, though... in a dark room. He experimented with developing monochromatic images. It was fascinating how the "mood" of an image changed by virtue of the color he used to develop it.

  16. Hamish looks adorable in every photo!

We had a daschund (Collin's dog) and a German shepherd (Mom's) and despute the size difference, they and my pig got on great. They were an odd trio, but for some crazy reason, it worked.

  17. I like smaller dogs (not the tiny ones) you can pick them up, they eat less, the cleaning up of poo is easier and I am so unstable for me smaller is better.
That said an older big dog thehamish likes would be nice. But finding the right one is hard. thehamish was badly hurt by a larger dog and is upset by them.
