Wednesday in Japan. Osaka

I love Osaka.
It is a great city and the people who live there are a hoot !
I always have the best time when I walk (when I could walk) around the city.
Especially in the older city .

I am re-running some photos of  Osaka for today's post,
while trying to learn the new Chrome program.

Downloading photos from my phone into Dropbox is not working, yet
but I will master it !

If you have read my blog for any time you will remember some of these photos,
my love of the Osaka Tower and the Takoyaki Stand below it.
Still the best Takoyaki I have ever had.
Little round dough balls filled with a small piece of octopus,
with sauce, tuna flakes, pickled ginger  and green onions on top.
Heaven in a bite.
.

 .

 .

Tsutenkaku ( Building leading to heaven) is a symbol of Osaka and has been in many movies.
It was built in 1912, and was a symbol of ShinSekai (A new world).
The lights on the round neon sign gives the weather forecast in color combinations.
White = fair, Orange = cloudy, Blue = rainy.

I want one of these Fugu lanterns
The fish it self is rather bland.

 .

 Takyoyaki street stand

Here they are making my favorite street food.
It takes just a few minutes from looking like the what chef oh the left is doing
to the cooked octopus balls the chef on the right is finishing.
You eat them with a toothpick.
They are wonderful.
....

And just because I can here is your mid week pretty.

thehamish and Watson looking very pretty.
Always napping together. thehamish always finds a way to snuggled in
wherever Watson sleeps.

takoyaki. . . parsnip
music. . . Tonati No Totoro,  Joe Hisaishi

    1. What food do you miss the most? And can you make it in your kitchen?

    2. We cook everything at home. But I miss the freshness of all the veggies, chicken and special fruits and herbs.
Plus every region has a special food they highlight.
I really miss the Kaki no Ha Zushi.... pressed sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves. This is from Nara. You use an oily fish, mackerel, salmon or trout curing the fish pressing it into a box filled with rice then pressed. Then rectangles are cut and wrapped in a persimmon leaf. The leaf is antibactraical, is salted and cured. The sushi is then placed back in the box. You can keep it without refigeration for a day or two but being an American If I buy it as take a way I put in the frig if any is left. My favorite is salmom and mackerel.
You do not eat the leaves.

  5. Were you living in Japan? I know you've said your son and his family are there. We're going next year to visit our daughter there. I'm not a very adventurous eater, my husband and daughter are so it ought to be interesting.

  6. Not living there but lots and lots of long visits.
Do not worry about the food. My family eats just about anything and everything so we do just fine.
But, ramen fresh ramen with miso and slow cooked pork or veggies, Gyoza (dumplings) cooked with chicken, shrimp pork or veggies. Chicken or pork pounded thin dusted with panko fried served on rice, Any type of fish you don't need to eat it raw but it is so good. Then there is tempura, veggie and shrimp or yakitori pieces of chicken cooked over a grill. I could go on and on but your can eat great food with out haveing everything raw. Many of the bakerys served the best sandwitches and rolls stuffed with ham.
I am so envious. I can't go on the trip I was planning, health problems.
You will do just fine and have a great time.

  9. We were in Kobe as a base and visited several of the other cities on day trips - the blessing of fast clean trains :) Loved the food even though I was a bit apprehensive before we went. In fact when we came home we found we didn't really enjoy the western takeaway or cafe style food any more and had to wean ourselves off the Japanese/ Chinese food we'd been eating. I've enjoyed this post, makes me want to go back but our son is returning home soon so I don't think it will happen now :(
You asked about my teacups, I keep them in a cabinet and don't use them a lot as I tend to drink from a mug rather than a cup these days.
I enjoyed the lovely photo of Watson and thehamish.

  12. The closest I've ever been to Japan has been Little Tokyo in Los Angeles and J-Town in San Francisco! Both were and are lovely, but still are removed by generations from the real thing. Perhaps one day we'll make that trip across the Pacific! Thank you for your lovely photos! xoxox

  13. When my brother was in the Marines, he was stationed in Japan for a number of years, and really loved it there. I think I'd like it, too, but it isn't too likely to ever get my hubby to travel there, because he's extremely uncomfortable in big cities and large crowds. One of the many side effects of his service as a combat infantryman.

    Have a super weekend!

  14. Lovely Japanese memories. My dear friend in Yamaguchi is constantly asking me to come over and experience "omentanoshi" (my spelling may be off). Maybe some day!

    Love the furry darlings.
