Friday already ?
Best day of the week if your a
Little Square Black Dogs.
But oh my goodness where has the week gone.
Oh yes, I spent most of it with thehamish at the veterinarians office.
With two of his four specialists.
.
New test were taken so we have to wait for results to see how
or if they differ from the ones taken 2 and 3 weeks ago.
There are still liver problems but we have to factor in his diabetes, gall bladder
problems and... so it goes on and on and on.
.
Back at the Ranch here is Dr.Watson
just waking up from a nap.
.
.
What a sweet baboo.
...........
And now for Cephalopod Coffeehouse.
Since this is Square Dog Friday post
I had to ask The Square Ones if I could post a book review,
on their day.
Of course we had to check their contract. We always have to check their contract.
on their day.
Of course we had to check their contract. We always have to check their contract.
Thank goodness no arbitration needed at this time.
Which makes me so happy as you know I always lose.
Which makes me so happy as you know I always lose.
A precedent was set on June 12, 2004, on page 25, paragraph 5, subsection 2
I can indeed place an attachment to a Square Dog Friday post.
For one extra chicken strip per day each, The Square Ones will now allow book review,
once a months on their Friday post.
once a months on their Friday post.
But since this would be the first book review they wanted to pick the book.
So instead of "Bringing Up The Bodies' we have instead
"First Dog Fala" by Elizabeth Van Steenwyk.
It is a children's book about President Franklin D. Roosevelt
and his Scottish Terrier, Fala.
A darling Scottish Terrier puppy enters Presidents Roosevelt life in 1940.
From that moment on Fala becomes the Presidents loyal friend through
the dark days of World War ll.
Historical facts are entwined with true stories of life of Fala and FDR.
A wonderful story book with easy to understand historical facts
with beautiful illustrations by Michael G. Montgomery.
For preschool up to third grade.
Oh dear, not quite the book review you were expecting !
But I will have three books to chose from next month,
with Square Dog approval.
..................
And just because I can here is your pretty for the weekend.
The answer to Mondays "what is this" question.
...
I found these at the posh market in town. And I am in love with these.
.
Please excuse the horrible space alien fingers holding the finger limes.
Just do not look, no really do not look !
I mean it, do not stare at the space alien fingers.
.
Microcitrus from Australia.
.
The pulp is tiny pearls of citrus that holds it's shape until the beads burst in your mouth.
You can't juice them.
So far, I have used them as garnish seafood, sushi, papaya, mango
and sprinkled them on salads.
Fabulous.
lime. . . parsnip

"The First Dog Fala", good choice good boys!
ReplyDeleteThey love their Scottish heritage.
DeleteFala was the subject of one of FDR's more famous speeches.
ReplyDeleteOnly you would know this.
DeleteBut I do remember he made this speech. Now must go look it up.
This book is a great step to engage young reader to reading and the history of our country.
Are you bracing for another winter storm ?
cheers, parsnip
Awww adorable thehamish. I hope he is doing well and the test result will be good. And Watson, love his sweet look waking up from a nap :-)
ReplyDeleteThe book sounds wonderful. Great book for kids to learn history and sounds fun for adults!
You cracked me up with "space alien fingers." Hahaha. No, your fingers don't look like aliens :-) That's a very interesting fruit. I could never imagine to see pearls like that inside! They remind me of salmon roe :-)
Not much to do but wait. he is diffidently not acting like thehamish I know. It is quite sad.
DeleteWell then maybe witch fingers ! hahahahaha
I thought they are exactly like salmon roe. That is why I put some on sushi it was tasty fun.
They still look like Godzilla's toenails to me ;-) Actually, the limes look quite tasty. Alas, the odds of me finding them in a local market will be nil.
ReplyDeleteHave been fascinated with the Fala story since I first read about him when I was a teenager. I had no idea there was a statue of Fala with FDR. I just love that. Holding a good thought for all of you down there and hope all will be well. X
Hope he's doing better soon.
ReplyDeleteI've got to get a copy of that book!
What interesting food you have over there.
ReplyDeleteThat poor darling square one - do hope things turn out alright in the end.
Interesting. I get stuff from Mellssa's but haven't seen those
ReplyDeletein my area. Super neat.
Hope all goes well with the square one.
Hey Parsnip - I just checked a local store where I buy my Melissa's
DeleteGinger and they don't carry the finger limes.
Oh well, that would have been fun to try.
This book sounds lovely - I'd like to have it in my own library and I'm not a kid.
ReplyDeleteYou have better gourmet markets that I do. I've never seen finger limes or microcitrus...feeling a little jealous, for no good reason.
Thanks for the great reveiw!
What interesting fruits! Good choice of book by the square ones.
ReplyDeleteI hope the Hamish feels better. Dr. Watson looks cozy on that colorful quilt. I enjoyed the book review about FDR's dog, Fala and learning about finger limes, they look delightful inside!
ReplyDeleteYert to the square boys!
ReplyDeleteFinger limes? I have never heard of them but they sound amazing. I'll check my new store to see if they have them, Whole Foods.
Smiles, Bee
xoxo
The finger limes were fun. But no going on my shopping list soon.
DeleteNever heard of finger limes. Must be delicious! The book looks very nice. Love the drawing. And for the dogs I wish them well.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend Parsnip.
We will have a great weekend no matter what happens.
DeleteWe are hoping for some rain in the valley and snow on the mountains.
I've never heard of finger limes, and I'm sure I would never find them in my neck of the woods. They look interesting though. The dog in the illustration looks like he's off on an adventure, I'm sure kids would love the book.
ReplyDeleteI learned that Fala did escape several times and had many adventures.
DeleteThe secret Service had to pick him up several times.
The boys are both sweet baboos.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching Ken Burns' documentary on the Roosevelts, and Fala gets prominent mention- including FDR mentioning how annoyed Fala was that the political opposition was criticizing the dog.
Returning from the Pacific it was reported that FDR left Fala behind on an island sending a battleship to fetch him. Costing billion of dollars.
DeleteIn the speech FDR had some fun with this and said,
Well of course, I don't resent attacks and my family doesn't resent attacks but Fala does resent them."
This is a wonderful book.
Finger limes! They're so cute...
ReplyDeleteThey would pick a book about Fala, wouldn't they? Thank you for sharing, and thanks for the boys for sharing a Friday.
But Of Course !
DeleteWe are now reading a book about the Three Naughty Scotties.
thehamish is enjoying the book while Watson thinks it is derivative and not up to the quality of this book.
The limes are wonderful but i would get them often. It was fun to experiment.
I use lots of lemons and limes in my cooking, these are more for the finishing touch.
I have to admit, I had no idea there were so many books about Scotties.
DeleteHow sweet of your baboos to share "their post" with a book review.(And about another dog, at that!) That book sounds like a terrific one to get kids interested in history.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so now I'm gonna have to check some of our international markets around here, and see if I can find some of those finger limes. They look like a fun food to try.
Happy weekend!
It was a book about a Scotty, so why not !
DeletePlus extra chicken strips are always good to have.
There are finger limes on Amazon but these were at the posh market so I tried them.
I think they would be wonderful on avocado slices.
I wrote a comment and it went away. I shall try to recreate it.
ReplyDeleteYour dogs are extraordinarily attractive. I have always enjoyed the story of Fala. It pleases me that although the Roosevelts were not happily married, Mrs. Roosevelt kept Fala after the president's death. Fridays at my blog are often Franklin Friday. Franklin the Bordernese writes a post. However, he doesn't have a contract. It's a freelance position, so I can replace him when I like. I did not accept his offering this week. He wrote about how good it feels to poop at the park instead of pooping at home. He wanted to add photos. I turned him down.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie

Must check out your blog... Franklin Friday !
DeleteI think the pooping post sounds just about right.
Nice looking dogs and that book about FDR and his dog sounds interesting--I wonder how children relate to it?
ReplyDeleteIt was a very easy read. Plus Fala is the main character and I think that is a great way to to engage children in reading.
DeleteThe fact it is a history book just is the cream on top.
The one thing in America now is to get children starting to read early and shut off the TV and Video games.
Plus the fact if your living in America you should be speaking English and know our history.
Reading, writing, math, U.S. and world history, civics and actually speaking English.
Education is so very important.
What a sweet book, my compliments to the Boys for picking it.
ReplyDeleteThey did enjoy the book very much.
DeleteCute book review, and sweet doggins. I love the citrus caviar!
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovey book.
DeleteThe citrus caviar is so tasty and fun.
Hamisch cuter than Fala and citrus pearls sound yummy. Have you ever seen those finger shaped avocados? They are extra special because of the small seed.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen the finger shaped avocados my look for them !
Deletethehamish woofed Thank you.
My colleague Kathleen Kinsolving wrote a book called Dogs of War which featured Fala as one of the dogs. Your babies are beautiful, by the way!
ReplyDeleteThe Square Ones woof thank you.
DeleteI have hear of that book. Must go check it out.
One summer I took the children to the East Coast and we toured all the Civil War Battle Fields.
Many of the State monuments had the company dog included. It was so sweet and so sad at the same time.
Lovely to catch up with the Square Black Dogs and to be introduced to Fala - knowing he loved his dog - and a Scottish Terrier to boot - sheds a new light on FDR.
ReplyDeleteHave a good week xLily
Your sweet baboo looks a little better.
