I just love the Totoro and Catbus sidewalks. What a lot of interesting details there are. I enjoyed this post!
ReplyDeleteI am a huge Ghibli fan and Totoro is my all time favorite movie.
DeleteOn my first trip to Japan we had booked a tour to the Ghibli Museum. It is strictly by advance purchase only. The town of Mitaka is so lovely I would move there in a second !
We took the train to Mitaka and at the station the yellow bus that picked us up was all decorated with Catbus and Dust Sprites... Loved it !
I hope to visit the woods that inspired Hayao Miyazaki which is a protected and was bought by donations.
Those covers would make beautiful rubbings parsnip.
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to do this many times, but first you have to find one that is not in the middle of a busy street. The Kobe one was somewhat safer and the Sanda one was on the sidewalk. But I had no paper and pencil.....
DeleteHello Gayle:
ReplyDeleteWhat amazing examples of pavement art. It is so interesting to think that such care and attention to detail is paid even to the very streets upon which one walks in Japan. A wonder that you do not find yourself colliding with fellow pedestrians as you gaze at your feet!!
I am very careful not look down too much on the busy streets especially like the last street by Osaka Tower. Not everywhere is that busy at all the time.
DeleteArt whereever you look. How wonderful!
ReplyDeleteMy son has some really fun and fabulous ones, they show special places in the city or meaning like the flowers of Sanda even one that has the firefighters that protect the Castles.
Deletewell how lovely! thoughtful and sweet too!

Form and function can work together and look good while doing it.
DeleteI'm surprised tourists don't cop some of those manhole covers as souvenirs. Probably be hard to get through customs, though.
ReplyDeleteYou just don't see that happening in Japan as much as it does here in the US. There is always some grandmother (obanchan) watching. The Osaka grandmother are a hoot they are crazy fun !
DeleteBut let me tell you I have often stood there contemplating how I could stuff some of these items in my suitcase. Most of all I want to take home one of the very small delivery trucks. I am sure I could get one in my overhead bin on the airplane !
Oh I love that Nara deer one! <3
ReplyDeleteI love the patterns of the cobblestones and sidewalks!
ReplyDeleteWonderful!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll actually get to Japan, now.
Mine are so pedestrian compared to this collection. These are spectacular! How funny that I missed this post and then did my manhole cover post so soon after. Great minds think alike! Thanks for sharing these. I can't get over how beautiful they are.
