Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge

Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, originally uploaded by angryparsnip.

The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, sometimes called the Pearl Bridge, is the
longest Suspension Bridge in the world. It connects Kobe on the
Honshu side to Iwaya on the Awaji Island over the Akashi Straits of
the Seto Inland Sea. This view is looking from the Island of Awaji
towards Akashi Hyogo.

I am a bridge person and I understand the economic the need for them
but I really look at bridges as works of art. To see this bridge in
person is to be amazed, besides the sheer length it is quite graceful
and I think very beautiful.

A fun fact. . . at night the color of the lights change on the bridge
tell you what kind of weather to expect the next day.

It is windy . . . parsnip

  1. I'm a bridge person too, I've loved them since I was a child. They are such amazing feats of engineering for a start but I suppose the thing that really appeals is that they are the physical manifestation of connection, or one of them.

Beautiful shot too; my homeland is such a lovely place!!!!!

  3. I wonder if you are familiar with our two suspension bridges over the Bristol Channel joining us to Wales and the wonderful Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol by the great Brunel. I acknowledge humbly that yours is bigger:)

  4. I know every time I've seen the Golden Gate Bridge, I've always had to have a long look. Bridges are works of art! I remember one of my favorites is in Pasadena ..they used to call it Suicide Bridge, but it really is very pretty.

  5. Wow just stumble on this blog, and this is one amazing bridge photo. I love bridges too, but prefer to look at them. I don't know where it happen, but I think you may have heard about the bridge that collapse from resonance. That is why army would never march on the bride. Excellent image again. Anna :)

In 1995 when the Kobe Earthquake hit the first 2 towers were built and they moved so the central span was extended about 1 meter.

I love the Golden Gate Bridge but I think the best view is from when you go under the bridge and look up. . .
I love the bridge on the Pasadena Freeway when you drop down from the 5 and pass under that ornate one the all that green vines. Is that the same one?
